Education
The education related work of the Monteagle-Sewanee Rotary Club is an extension of youth services.
Literacy Boot Camp
Since 2021, the Monteagle-Sewanee Rotary Club has been involved with the Literacy Boot Camp Program at Monteagle Elementary School (MES). The purpose of this Literacy Boot Camp is to improve reading fluency, which is the bridge between recognizing words and comprehension. The MES Literacy Boot Camp specifically focuses on third graders' ability to read accurately, smoothly, and with expression. Boot Camp volunteers work for four weeks (usually 12 sessions) to read with two children. The Tennessee State Retention Law requires a certain level of reading in order to advance to the fourth grade. The focus in working with these third graders has been instrumental in improving their scores. The work with the annual Boot Camp has produced other volunteer opportunities for our club, such as the school’s annual book fair and volunteering as proctors during TCAP testing.
Bratton Scholarship
The Bratton Scholarship Endowment, named after our beloved Rotary member John Bratton, is awarded by merit to a citizen of Grundy County who is accepted to and plans to attend the University of the South The award goes directly toward the recipient’s tuition fees. The endowment for the Bratton Scholarship has surpassed $100,000.
Grundy County Scholarship
The Grundy County Scholarship is designed to supplement the continuing education of a selected Grundy County High School Senior. This student may choose to go to a 4 year college, a 2 year college, or a trade school. A panel from the Grundy County School Board selects the recipient of the scholarship using merit-based criteria. The Monteagle-Sewanee Rotary Club provides recipients an award of approximately $1,000 toward financial aid.
